Are HDR monitors good for gaming?
True-HDR monitors are good for gaming because they add a whole new level of color depth and image realism. If you want the sharpest and most realistic images, an HDR screen is the best solution. On the positive side, HDR has little negative impact on game performance, making it an easy way to improve the visual experience. For some, enabling HDR is a better visual improvement than increasing the resolution.
The downside is that not all games implement HDR and you’ll need a compatible graphics card. Before making a decision, I recommend you look at other display characteristics such as resolution, color depth, brightness, and hertogenicity. In my opinion, HDR isn’t the most important feature of a new monitor, but it’s nice to have and an easy way to revisit your screen in the future.
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. It is a media profile standard that improves the contrast and brightness of displays. Displays with good HDR are able to offer more vivid and realistic colors. There are also different types of HDR variants (five in total), and each manufacturer offers a different variant.
The most common types of HDR are HDR-10, HDR 10+ and HDR 1400. Dolby DDR is called Dolby Vision. Vesa’s HDR standard is the easiest to understand. In the Vesa standard, there is a three-digit number next to the acronym for the maximum number of nits (brightness) that HDR adds. I’ll recommend some specifications later.

How does HDR work in games?
Even if the monitor supports HDR, the game and graphics card must also support this feature. Most modern games have settings for HDR in the graphics options. Not all games have it, and only a handful are able to use it properly. Most games use a variant of HDR that is not identical to true HDR.
Obviously, the experience you get when playing with HDR depends on the type of HDR used and how it is implemented by the game. Good HDR improves the color scale in games. The colour palette is determined by the designers and artists. In some games, improving the colors and brightness can really improve the quality of the scene. In other games, however, HDR can blur the colors of scenes by changing the color profile too much.

If you want a good HDR experience, it’s best to use your HDR display in conjunction with a next-generation console, since consoles support HDR by default.
HDR and graphics cards:
As mentioned above, not all graphics cards support HDR. The biggest problem is not the hardware of the graphics card, but the connections. HDR only works with HDMI 2.0 connectors, DVI does not support HDR, and DisplayPort only supports it with DisplayPort 1.4 and above. Make sure your graphics card supports HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.

For the best HDR experience:
- Select a monitor with HDR-600 or higher.

- Play the game at 1440 or 4K.
- Use an OLED (preferred) or IPS monitor
- Enable G-Sync or AMDS FreeSync

HDR is more of a nice side effect to have, but not really necessary. Even if you have an HDR screen, few games, especially on Windows, implement this feature properly. Another option is an OLED TV in 4K with HDR compatibility.
