Are HDR Monitors Good For Gaming?
You want to upgrade your display and you’ve noticed that most new displays have a feature called HDR.
Are HDR screens good for gaming? Are they worth updating? To find out, we dive into the world of HDR monitors.
Are HDR monitors good for gaming?
True-HDR monitors are good for gaming because they add a whole new level of color depth and image realism. If you want the sharpest and most realistic images, an HDR screen is the best solution. On the positive side, HDR has little negative impact on game performance, making it an easy way to improve the visual experience. For some, enabling HDR is a better visual improvement than increasing the resolution.
The downside is that not all games implement HDR and you’ll need a compatible graphics card. Before making a decision, I recommend you look at other display characteristics such as resolution, color depth, brightness, and hertogenicity. In my opinion, HDR isn’t the most important feature of a new monitor, but it’s nice to have and an easy way to revisit your screen in the future.
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. It is a media profile standard that improves the contrast and brightness of displays. Displays with good HDR are able to offer more vivid and realistic colors. There are also different types of HDR variants (five in total), and each manufacturer offers a different variant.
The most common types of HDR are HDR-10, HDR 10+ and HDR 1400. Dolby DDR is called Dolby Vision. Vesa’s HDR standard is the easiest to understand. In the Vesa standard, there is a three-digit number next to the acronym for the maximum number of nits (brightness) that HDR adds. I’ll recommend some specifications later.

How does HDR work in games?
Even if the monitor supports HDR, the game and graphics card must also support this feature. Most modern games have settings for HDR in the graphics options. Not all games have it, and only a handful are able to use it properly. Most games use a variant of HDR that is not identical to true HDR.
Obviously, the experience you get when playing with HDR depends on the type of HDR used and how it is implemented by the game. Good HDR improves the color scale in games. The colour palette is determined by the designers and artists. In some games, improving the colors and brightness can really improve the quality of the scene. In other games, however, HDR can blur the colors of scenes by changing the color profile too much.
If it’s Z. For example, there are bright areas in the game, such as. B. Sunlight, HDR can enhance sunlight to create a kind of blooming effect that includes other details of the game. The quality of HDR depends on the monitor you choose, how it implements the technology, and how the game developers have designed the graphics. Overall, HDR significantly improves colors in games.
HDR also works best on displays that use FALD (Full Local Area Dimming) or OLEDs. Most monitors do not support local ray dimming, but newer TVs do.
Games with HDR support:
Currently, there aren’t many games that support true HDR. Here’s a short list of popular titles that support HDR:
- Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, Origins, and Valhalla.
- Battlefield 1 and V
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare
- Cyberpunk 2077
- The eternal destiny
Most games released after 2017 use some version of HDR. Older titles are sometimes updated, especially the Remastered editions, to add HDR compatibility.
Note that most games that support HDR look better on consoles than on PC. The reason seems to be in the window, as it requires more customization. If you want a good HDR experience, it’s best to use your HDR display in conjunction with a next-generation console, since consoles support HDR by default.
HDR and graphics cards:
As mentioned above, not all graphics cards support HDR. The biggest problem is not the hardware of the graphics card, but the connections. HDR only works with HDMI 2.0 connectors, DVI does not support HDR, and DisplayPort only supports it with DisplayPort 1.4 and above. Make sure your graphics card supports HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.
Simple instructions for HDR:
If all these terms drive you crazy, I can’t blame you. The world of HDR is very complex and there is a lot of misinformation available. Not to mention that visual quality is also subjective. Anyway, for your convenience, I’ve put together a short guide to help you make the most of HDR in your games.
For the best HDR experience:
- Select a monitor with HDR-600 or higher.
- Make sure your graphics card has the required connections (HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4).
- Check if your favorite games are compatible with True HDR.
- Play the game at 1440 or 4K.
- Use an OLED (preferred) or IPS monitor
- Enable G-Sync or AMDS FreeSync
If you can meet all these requirements, the graphics of your games will be incredible. You might also consider connecting your PC to an OLED TV with HDR support. OLED screens generally offer better quality and color accuracy than other types of panels.
Preset to HDR:
The most obvious drawback of HDR monitors is their price. These monitors are very expensive, some costing more than a new computer. There are entry-level monitors that have some version of HDR, but that’s not enough. The Acer Predator X27 is a remarkable True HDR monitor. Currently, TVs offer better HDR options than monitors, and they are also cheaper, although that may change in the near future.
In short, HDR can breathe new life into visual effects in games, but it comes at a price. My suggestion is to look for monitors that have the features you really want and need. HDR is more of a nice side effect to have, but not really necessary. Even if you have an HDR screen, few games, especially on Windows, implement this feature properly. Another option is an OLED TV in 4K with HDR compatibility.
