Windows 7 OpenVPN TAP driver unsigned error

I’m having a lot of trouble getting a Windows 7 virtual machine (VM) to connect to a VPN. I’m using a Ubuntu 12.04 host, with a bridged network interface and an OpenVPN client installed. However, when I try to connect to a VPN server using the TAP driver included with OpenVPN, I get the following error:

  1. Click the Start button on the taskbar.
  2. Enter the network in the search field.
  3. Select Network status.
  4. Click on the Network and Sharing button.
  5. Select the Change Adapter Settings option.
  6. Right-click on the Windows TAP adapter.
  7. Select Disconnect.
  8. Right-click on the Windows TAP adapter again.
  9. Select Activate.
  10. Restart the computer and see if the problem persists.

3. Reinstall the Windows TAP adapter and the VPN client

  1. Right-click on the computer.
  2. Select Control.
  3. Expand the Network Adapter category.
  4. Right-click on the TAP-Windows V9 adapter.
  5. Click on the Remove Device button.
  6. Select Delete to confirm.
  7. Press the key combination Windows + R.
  8. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  9. Select the OpenVPN software.
  10. Click on the Uninstall button to uninstall.
  11. Restart the computer immediately after removing both services.
  12. Reinstall the OpenVPN software + the TAP adapter driver.

4. Switch to a more secure VPN

5. Resetting Windows 7

  1. Start the computer.
  2. Hold down the F8 key.
  3. From the Advanced Startup Options menu, choose Repair Computer.
  4. Press the Enter key.
  5. Select a keyboard language and press Next.
  6. When prompted, log on using an administrator account.
  7. In the System Restore options, select System Restore or Boot Restore (if available).
